Age progression vs aging filter: they are not the same thing

An aging filter applies a fixed overlay of aging cues — wrinkle textures, grey hair, sagging — to the photo you already have. Age progression generates a new image of the face as it would be at a target age, changing proportions and volume rather than painting on top. Filters are faster and read as a joke; generated progressions preserve identity better and are what you want if the result is meant to be kept or shared as a keepsake.
The technical difference in one paragraph
A filter is a transformation of the pixels you already have: warp, texture blend, colour shift. It is cheap, instant and reversible, and it does not know what a face is beyond a landmark mesh. A generative age model produces a new image conditioned on your face and a target age, so it can change things a filter cannot — the volume of the midface, the shape of the lower eyelid, the way the jawline reads — which is exactly where real facial aging happens.

How to tell which one you are looking at
- Filters keep your original face shape exactly; only surface detail changes.
- Filters age everyone the same way — the same wrinkle map appears on different faces.
- Generated progressions change silhouette and proportion, and differ per person.
- Generated progressions are slower and usually cost something, because each image is computed.
Which one you actually want
For a five-second laugh in a group chat, the free filter is the right tool and paying for anything else is silly. For a birthday card, a reunion post, a motivational before/after, or anything you intend to keep, the generated version is the one that still looks like the person a year later.
Each decade is generated separately, so 40 and 80 are different faces rather than the same effect at two strengths.
